Le groupe a vu le jour en 1996 à Ajax en Ontario le 41e jour de l'été, c'est de là que vient leur nom « Sum 41 », Sum étant en anglais le diminutif du mot summer signifiant « été ». Composé initialement de Deryck Whibley (guitare et chant) et Steve Jocz (batterie), la formation est complétée par le recrutement de Dave Baksh (guitare) et de Jason McCaslin (basse). Les membres du groupe sont alors âgés en moyenne de 16 ans et s'affublent d'un pseudo : Bizzy.D (Deryck), Stevo 32 (Steve), Dave Brownsound (Dave) et Cone (Jason).

Sum 41 attire très vite le public et les maisons de disques, friandes à l'époque de cette jeunesse. Après plusieurs spectacles et premières parties de concert dont Blink 182, ils signent en 1999 avec le label Canadien Aquarius pour le Canada, et Island Records pour les États-Unis. Ce sera Universal qui sera chargé de la distribution.

Ils ne tardent pas à sortir leur premier album Half Hour Of Power en juin 2000. Un son punk « garage » plutôt agressif qui met en avant le potentiel de Stevo 32. Cependant, l'album se vend peu, mais leur donnera l'occasion d'effectuer une tournée aux États-Unis. En effet, Sum 41 assura la 1re partie de groupes très connus : Blink-182 et The Offspring, entre autres.

Après plusieurs mois sur la route et une notoriété qui ne fait qu'augmenter, ils retournent en studio avec le producteur Jerry Finnbad afin d'enregistrer All Killer, No Filler sorti en mai 2001.

Is it True what i Heared ?? Avril lavigne is Going to Break Up with Deryck Whilbey ??

That's what i heard, But Why ?? I Checked Avril lavigne's My Space and I Found This Note writed by her :

Moving forward on a positive note

Deryck and I have been together for 6 and a half years. We have been friends since I was 17, started dating when I was 19, and married when I was 21. I am grateful for our time together, and I am grateful and blessed for our remaining friendship. I admire Deryck and have a great amount of respect for him. He is the most amazing person I know and I love him with all my heart. Deryck and I are separating and moving forward on a positive note.
